- Frequently Asked Questions -

I don't live in Austin. Can you still build my website?
Even though my office is located in Austin, Texas, I've worked with clients from all over. I will collaborate with you remotely through the use of
e-mail and phone. Technology makes it easy!

I already have a website. Can you update it or spruce it up for me?
Of course! Please contact me to discuss a customized quote as this will greatly depend on how your existing website is set up and what you want done to it.

I've already purchased my domain name. Is that ok?
Sure! I'll just need to get some login information from you so that I can get it associated with your website. Please make sure to keep all the information associated with your domain including the company's name from whom you purchased it.

What's a web host and do I have to have one?
Yes, you must have a web host. A web host provides you with the space on the Internet where the files which make up your website reside. Without web hosting, your website would not be accessible on the Internet at all. My Basic Package includes the first month of web hosting for free. After that you will either need to get on my Monthly Maintenance Plan or purchase your own web hosting. Hosting usually runs less than $10.00 per month and I will be happy to recommend some reputable hosting companies and set it up for you. My standard rate of $30.00 per hour applies for the time spent setting up hosting if you choose not to subscribe to my Monthly Maintenance Plan.

How will people find my website?
Although your website can be found by using a search engine, good old fashioned word of mouth works better than anything. Every piece of marketing material for your business should have your website address on it. Your e-mail signature should include your website address. If you have a physical storefront, you should have a sign somewhere with your website address on it or you could add it to your cash register receipts. It's also very important that your domain name be as close to your business name as possible. Your customers expect your business to have a website and will often just try typing in your business name and adding a ".com" to the end to try to find you.

There are ways to ensure that your website appears at the top of the list when someone searches for particular keywords on a search engine. However, the majority of search engines now use a complicated and potentially expensive pay-per-click system in order to get your website to rank higher on their list. Should you choose to go this route, I'll be happy set this up for you. My standard rate of $30.00 per hour applies for the time spent on this.

Is there a limit to how many photos I can have on my website?
Not exactly. There is not a magic number of photographs that would automatically be "too many," and unless you are a photographer, chances are that you are not going to need or want to keep galleries with hundreds of photos on your website. If you do need this type of service, I can certainly provide it; just keep in mind that there may be additional charges for me to resize and optimize your photos for the web. Please contact me to discuss a quote.

Do you provide photography services?
While I'm not a professional photographer, I am pretty handy with a digital camera and photo editing. I will be happy to take photos for your website. My standard hourly rate of $30.00 will apply for time spent on the actual photography, photo editing and any travel time outside of Austin and the immediately surrounding cities. If you'd rather, I can refer you to an excellent professional photographer.

If I take my own photos, can you edit them for me?
Absolutely. I want your website to look as good as possible and that includes all the photos.

Can you add Flash to my website?
I don't work in Flash, but there are many effects that I can create on your website that mimic the look of Flash without the drawbacks. Therefore, my first question to you would be, "Are you sure you really need/want Flash?" While Flash can admittedly look pretty cool, if a visitor doesn't have the proper software installed on their computer, they won't be able to view your website. In addition, search engines can't read the content contained in Flash so your website's search hits will suffer proportionately. And lastly, if a visitor doesn't have a high-speed internet connection, your website will take entirely too much time to browse so, chances are, they'll get frustrated and go somewhere else. Feel free to contact me to discuss your non-Flash alternatives.

Once my website is finished, can you maintain it?
Absolutely! For a small monthly fee, I will provide all the required maintenance on your website including the monthly web hosting fee, small updates (like adding new products, news, updating a calendar of events, etc.), and tracking the number of visitors to your page. I'll even provide you with a monthly report of your website's traffic.

Can I update my website myself?
Your website is your property and you're free to make any changes to it you'd like. In order to update your website you need to be familiar with advanced HTML, CSS and possibly some JavaScript. You'll also need a text editor like Edit Plus or a wysiwyg editor like Dreamweaver and an FTP client like Filezilla or CuteFTP. Please understand that if you alter your website and it no longer works properly, I will charge you my standard hourly rate of $30.00 per hour to repair the code.

Can you teach me how to update my website?
Unfortunately, no. Training you to update your website means I would have to teach you how to code in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It took me years to learn what I know and it's not something I can just send you instructions for or teach you how to do in an hour or two.

Most community colleges offer classes in basic HTML.

I'm ready to have my website built. What's next?
Contact me and let me know what kind of business you have and what type of website you want. I will send you a packet via email that's chock-full of information and instructions for what I need from you to get started.

Can you design my business cards, letterhead, flyers, etc. to match my website?
As a matter of fact, I can! I have been designing print media for 6 years and would be happy to help you put together a total marketing package. Please contact me for a quote.
